About

Founded in 1805 and still the only city in the United States with its name, Gouverneur is a quiet little town with a fascinating history and a friendly, welcoming community. Due to the abundance of the white dolomite marble in the area, Gouverneur is known for its many gorgeous marble buildings and has been called the “Marble Village” because of them. Gouverneur is filled with small businesses that add significantly to the local economy and are fully supported by the community. As a resident of the Woodcreek Village neighborhood, you are within walking distance from tons of local shops and restaurants, which creates a pleasant social atmosphere within the community.

Surrounded by rolling hills, fresh water rivers, and away from bustling city life, Gouverneur is a paradise for outdoor activity. Located between the magnificent Adirondack Mountains and the beautiful Thousand Islands region, Gouverneur is a short drive from endless opportunities for recreational activity. There is also lots to do outdoors right in Gouverneur. Just down the road at Riverview Park, spend time with your friends and family while you use the park’s picnic areas, baseball fields, basketball court, skateboard park and boat launch. If you’re a golfer, enjoy a round of golf at one of the two local golf courses—Emerald Greens and Gouverneur Country Club.

A quick drive will bring you to a city setting if you want a change from Gouverneur’s small town atmosphere. Just 30 miles south west of Gouverneur is Watertown, which has a city-like culture with lots of shops, restaurants and a stimulating social scene. The Canadian border is only 20 miles away and Woodcreek Village is about an hour and a half drive to Ottawa, one of Canada’s largest and most exciting cities.
